How to Use Elkonin Boxes: A Step-by-Step Teaching Guide

Use one box for each sound—not each letter—then guide the learner through a simple Segment → Blend → Spell routine.

To use Elkonin boxes, say a word, move one counter into a box for each sound, sweep across the boxes to blend the word, and then—when the learner is ready—replace each counter with the letter or letters that spell that sound. The central rule is simple: one box represents one phoneme, not one letter.

That distinction matters. Ship has four letters but three sounds: /sh/ /ĭ/ /p/. It therefore needs three sound boxes. This guide gives families and educators a repeatable routine, examples that become gradually more complex, and corrections for the mistakes that most often make sound-box practice confusing.

What are Elkonin boxes?

Elkonin boxes—also called sound boxes—are connected spaces used to make the sounds in a spoken word visible. A learner listens to a word and moves a counter into one box for every phoneme heard. Sound boxes can support two related kinds of practice:

  • Phonemic-awareness practice: The learner works with spoken sounds and counters, without needing to see letters.
  • Phonics and spelling practice: After segmenting the word, the learner replaces the counters with the grapheme or graphemes that represent each sound.

How to use Elkonin boxes: Segment → Blend → Spell

ABZ’s Sound Box Studio uses the same three-step routine for every word. Keeping the language and actions consistent lets the learner focus on the sounds instead of learning new directions each time.

  1. Segment. Say the whole word naturally. Repeat it slowly, listening for each sound. Move one counter into a box as each phoneme is spoken.
  2. Blend. Sweep a finger from left to right beneath the filled boxes. Say the sounds without long pauses, then say the whole word.
  3. Spell. Once the sounds are secure, replace each counter with the letter or letter team that spells that sound.

For a first session, model one word, complete two together, and invite the learner to try two with less help. A brief, successful session is more useful than continuing after attention and accuracy have dropped.

Elkonin box examples: count sounds, not letters

Choose words whose sounds and spellings match what the learner has already been taught. The examples below show why the number of boxes does not always equal the number of printed letters.

When letters enter the boxes, keep every letter that represents one sound together. In ship, write sh in the first box. In a magic-e word such as cake, show the complete spelling pattern while keeping the sound count at three.

A five-minute sound-box lesson

  1. Choose one taught pattern. Use CVC words first, or select a digraph, blend, or magic-e set that matches the current lesson.
  2. Preview the word. Show a picture or explain its meaning so vocabulary does not become the obstacle.
  3. Model the first word. Say, “The word is map. I hear /m/ /ă/ /p/. I will move one counter for each sound.”
  4. Practice together. Ask the learner to repeat the word and move the counters while saying the sounds.
  5. Blend it back. Sweep beneath the boxes and say the word smoothly.
  6. Connect to print when ready. Replace counters with known spellings, then read the completed word.
  7. End with a quick review. Return to each completed word and ask the learner to segment or blend it once more.

Common Elkonin box mistakes—and what to do instead

Using one box for every letter

Try this: Say the word without showing its spelling first. Ask the learner to count the sounds. Reveal the letters only after the phonemes have been mapped.

Treating a digraph as two sounds

Try this: Contrast ship with stop. The sh in ship represents one phoneme, while /s/ and /t/ in stop remain two distinct sounds.

Adding an “uh” after consonants

Try this: Model the clean consonant sound—/m/, not “muh”—so the learner does not hear or map an extra vowel.

Introducing spellings too soon

Try this: Stay with counters if the learner cannot yet segment the spoken word. Add letters only after the sound sequence is clear.

Using unfamiliar words or untaught patterns

Try this: Select a small, related word set. Check that the learner knows the word’s meaning and has been taught the spelling pattern before expecting independent spelling.

When should you move beyond basic sound boxes?

Continue basic practice while a learner still needs support isolating or ordering phonemes. When segmentation becomes accurate and steady, change one part of the task rather than abandoning the visual structure:

  • Replace counters with letters or letter teams.
  • Compare two words that differ by one sound, such as map and mop.
  • Add, remove, or substitute a phoneme.
  • Read the completed words in short phrases or sentences.
