Context clues are words, phrases, examples, and relationships surrounding an unfamiliar word. Readers combine these clues with word parts and background knowledge to form a reasonable meaning.

What students are learning
Useful clues may include a definition, synonym, antonym, example, restatement, or cause-and-effect relationship. Not every sentence provides enough information, so students also need to know when to consult another source.
The goal is not to guess from one nearby word. Students should test a proposed meaning in the sentence and explain which evidence supports it.
